To be more specific, here's what I'm getting at.....
I'm in the midst of trying to find a VNC client that will allow me to dump my desktop PC monitor so I can control that PC from my new laptop (Thus freeing up the space on the desk). I have Windows Live Mesh, but it's still in Beta (And we all know what sort of things can happen whenever Microsoft releases something in Beta, don't we? ). Anyway, I figured I'd give Gbridge a try to see what it would do by running it through a series of tests.Well, after installing it and successfully logging onto the desktop PC, I then started a series of RW field tests which would show me the ability of how the two computers would communicate under various circumstances like any network administrator would do in this situation. The first test I performed was a straight reboot of the desktop PC which would be indicative of what might be required during a security update of some kind (Such as Windows Update for example). The second test I was going to perform after the restart was going to be a simple soft reboot of the desktop PC akin to what you might see during an unexpected power surge or momentary power failure caused by a lightning strike to a power line or transformer which DOES NOT cause an outage. The third & final test I was going to perform after the restart was going to be a hard reboot of the desktop PC akin to what you might see during a complete (Yet temporary power failure caused by a lightning strike to a power line or transformer which DOES cause an outage. I was not able to perform the last two tests because I had to walk over to the desktop PC & log onto the desktop PC that way after the first test. This is because it has a Windows Logon screen. Windows Live Mesh has no problem with this once the client on the laptop detects that the desktop is online, I can generally connect to it (Though since the desktop PC is considerably slower than the laptop, it generally takes awhile for a successful connection to be made). Is there any way to get around this? I'd really like to get that bulky desktop PC monitor off my desk & move my laptop over there ASAP!! Help!! I look forward to all the replies..... Cheers

If I'm understanding you right, the problem is Gbridge does not run as a service, so you must first log on (to the windows desktop) before Gbridge can initiate.
The only option at the moment would be to turn off the need to log on, on your Desktop PC so it boots up straight into the desktop. Last edited by kgb; 09-30-2009 at 07:14 AM. |

I'll be sure to post back with an update as I'm sure this could be useful information to someone else in the same boat as I am. Cheers

Okay....I just made a change in CONTROL PANEL > USER ACCOUNTS whereas I've disabled Windows Logon window, but I still get the administrator dialog box which asks for a password (Which I am admin BTW however I never assigned myself a password as there's no need). I am listed as Owner on my desktop PC.
Once I click the OK button on the aforementioned dialog box, there's another obstacle to deal with. Windows XP always asks me if it should be allowed to open the volume control of the onboard sound chipset BEFORE it will do anything else INCLUDING loading anything else (Although it will finish displaying the rest of the desktop). The onboard chipset is the VIA AC97 Windows Live Mesh doesn't have this problem per se as it runs as a Service. Any other suggestions? I'd rather not have to take the desktop in & PAY someone to reconfigure it whereas it boots up flawlessly & uninterrupted during the boot process. ![]() Cheers

Pat, use TweakUI from Microsoft to set Windows to AutoLogin using the account of your choice (with a password or without).

Second that! I'd very much like to see logging in after a reboot as a built-in option...
