No question. Don't even think about it, start work imediately :D.... must make a version for Windows Mobile. There are vnc clients already available (vncviewer and zoomVNC for example).

The second (though related) suggestion... create your own, simple file-transfer screen like the one inside vnc, but which can be used outside of vnc, and works better. 2 reasons: a. the file transfer in this vnc does not allow you to type a path or browse through the LAN to find a shared folder on the other end of the connection. In other words, you can only transfer files to/from local folders on the VNC server. This can be a big problem for me and many, I am sure (pcAnywhere and many similar file transfer utilities allow browsing through the LAN on the server end). b. Creating this seperate function would allow the user to block vnc connections, but still allow file transfer or vice versa.

Thanks for the suggestions!

For the second suggestions, as a work around, you can create some SecureShares on the source computer and access remotely. Gbridge supports create SecureShares that use network folders as source. The drawback is that you need to create the SecureShares upfront before you can access them remotely.

Yes, SecureShares could be a reasonable substitute. However, I don't see how you upload a file from the local computer to the remote one using a SecureShare. That has to be added no matter what, I think... preferably by simply dragging and dropping a file from the local computer.

(Without that funtion, I suppose you could set up a SecureShare on the local computer, vnc to the remote desktop, and then download a file in that direction, but I am sure you don't want people to have to do that kind of gymnastics!)

You are right, currently it is a bit awkward to upload a file (or directory) to a remote computer. There is one work around (no vnc involved) though. You can use EasyBackup (by clicking the "Add EasyBackup" button) to sync a local SecureShare to a remote computer that belongs to you (basically create an autosync remotely) , and you can remotely start/stop an autosync job by click "list autosync task" menu under the remote computer icon. The drawbacks are: 1. still involves several steps. 2. the destination dir location are kind of fixed. i.e. all under [drive]:\Gbridge-backup. The challenge is how to make it simple to use while keep it secure (so a compromised computer won't be able to inject some bad files to the system folder in you other computers :-) ).

Thanks for the suggestion!

ewwwww.... I am starting to feel like there are too many retrictions and quirks going on here. Maybe too clever and overprotective of the user from himself.

First, I didn't realize that's how EasyBackups worked. I was hoping to use it to keep some folders synced. If I have a huge mp3 collection, for example, and I want to keep it synced between my laptop and my desktop, I can't do it with Gbridge (like I thought I could). That is unless maybe I want to keep both copies under the "\Gbridge-backup\" folder, which I wouldn't.

If I want to just send a file from this machine to that one, I have to do it through vnc... that is ok i guess, just feels wrong. And also, it is less secure in a way. It means I need to allow full vnc access to the computer when maybe all I want to do is allow true file sharing (both directions) in designated folders.

Actually in your mp3 backup scenario, Gbridge can handle it though SecureShare + AutoSync (or just EasyBackup), you can try and verify it :-)

To clarify, there is no restriction of what is the source of the SecureShare or AutoSync or EasyBackup, and there is no restriction of the destination of an AutoSync that is created directly. The "\Gbridge-backup\" restriction only applies to AutoSync destination if the AutoSync is created remotely through EasyBackup. Actually EasyBackup is just a combination (or shortcut) of SecureShare and (remotely created) AutoSync. You can achieve the same backup function without any destination directory restriction if you create the AutoSync on your destination directly. SecureShare + AutoSync >= EasyBackup.

We will consider a convienient file upload function in the next major release. Thanks!

Oops, sorry. I am obviously still finding my way, and I forgot that AutoSync was seperate from EasyBackup. That helps. I guess I was confused partly because an EasyBackup task shows up in the list of AutoSyncs, and not seperately (even though it is like a "push up" operation, where a normal AutoSync is a "pull down"). Somewhat confusing.

I don’t think there is a way to do this, but just in case I’m not right, here is a link to the Windows Mobile help site.
