View Full Version : Option for the Virtual Network Adapter to appear unplugged when GBridge not running

I have unfortunately been forced to remove GBridge from my computers simply because it severely disabled local network access on them.
The problem, I believe, is that the Virtual Network Adapter will always appear as connected, even when GBridge isn't running or connected at all. Therefore, Windows assumes that since it is connected and a physical connection (windows seems to prefer wired over wireless, inexplicably) it will all but ignore network activity to the local network over the actual adapters (instead attempting to channel it through the virtual adapter, where it is obviously ignored on the ports it has disabled).
At first, I though I was stupid and not understanding things.
After installing GBride, I tested out it's features to a reasonable extent. I was working with two computers connected via a router. Both had GBridge and (before that) would "talk" to each other nicely, I could browse the Server's shares, etc. However, after installing and testing GBride, this connectivity was lost. I could no longer browse the other computer or access the ports available (unless it was through the GBridge shares). I could still access any internet site, just not the Lan.
After disabling GBridge's associated adapter (and watching the program complain about it) everything went back to normal again.
So I suggest that the Virtual Network Adapter to be shown as "Disconnected" when GBridge isn't actively using it, so when I want to access the Local network I can without needing to Disable and Enable it (Which adds an unnecessary layer of complexity).

Which release you are running? Earlier release do have some problems that may cause the issue you described. Can you try to upgrade to the a release 1.0.0.1146 or after? Please let me know the result. Note that you need to upgrade both sides.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, When I reinstalled GBridge using a fresh copy from the home page, my situation Reversed! At least, for my main development computer... So far it seems the secondary PC is unaffected too much.
At first, it seemed to have worked and my problems were solved, Internet access was fine (although every request was severely delayed, ranging about ten to forty seconds for a response to come through) and I could still see the PCs on my network. However, after a while, I discovered that DNS requests were no longer working on the Primary computer for some reason.
The (partial) results of an ipconfig:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 7:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : gbridge.net
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::7df2:5b9e:9e02:7668%25
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.239.0.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.239.255.254
Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : is-a-geek.net
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::6499:e383:2096:7f52%9
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.232.62
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.232.1
I find that if I access the Internet using ip addresses, it still works. However, since many sites redirect to a hard-coded host name, browsing is rather painful. I would like to point out however, that there isn't any lag in receiving responses from requests (as when the DNS was apparently still working) :(
I have no Idea why my particular network configuration is so baffling to GBridge that it refuses to operate in a consistent manner, and it saddens me deeply that it's features include connectivity no matter what... Indeed, I have a rather healthy connection between the other PCs using GBridge, however it seems I am segregated to the outside realms in a way.
Some diagnostic steps I took:
I of course tried Microsoft's "Diagnostics" (which, in my opinion is rather pathetic).
Then I tried pinging the various addresses listed in the Ipconfig listing, DNS and local IP. DNS never responded once, but of course pinging myself worked fine. ;)
I'm going to try restarting my Primary PC, however, I don't have very high hopes for it working for very long...
Edit: Okay, Restarting seems to have fixed it for now, I'll post if anything changes.

Well, I came home from work today and found my computer on fire!
Okay, it wasn't on fire, but it was terribly hot because my CPU was being bogged down for whatever reason by GBridge.
I have no Idea what it was doing, because the frontend of the app was still responding (meaning buttons were still clickable and windows wasn't complaining about it) yet I couldn't cause the application to do anything at all (log off, exit, whatever). By the way, the log contains no information at all, just that GBridge started many times...
Eventually I just killed the process and restarted it.
On another note:
I noticed that there is a new version (1169) Do you know if there is a way to update a little more automatically? Like, instead of having to uninstall and re-install, maybe just apply a patch? (kinda like a .diff ;)) Most programs will simply put up a notification or flash a button saying "click to update" and it will ask for admin privs to do so, I think this can be done easily enough.

Sorry for the inconvenience. The hang problem you experienced may relate to a upnp detection bug. Please try 1.0.0.1176, which uses a new upnp library.
To update, you don't need to uninstall and reinstall. Just launch the gbridge and click the help button, and select "check for updates".
Please keep us posted.

Ah! Somehow I missed that option in the help menu, that's exactly what I was talking about. Awesome! Major plus points for that. So far, so good on the problems, it seems like they're mostly gone now.
